Fažana is located in the southern part of the western coast of Istria in the Fažana channel.
History
In antique times, the Roman patricians built their villas and country residences in Fažana and its surrounding area and planted olive groves. The town received its antique name Vasianum after the amphora factory which used to be there.

Nowadays Fazana and nearby towns of Valbandon and Peroj are popular tourist destinations because of their beautiful natural beaches, seaside promenades, local cuisine offered in restaurants along the coast, pine forests, diverse tourist accommodation and activities (swimming pools, football, basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis, bike, canoe and pedal boat rental, parasailing, jet skiing, archery, windsurfing center, etc.).

In the port and on the promenade there are many summer festivities, the oldest and most famous of which is the “Party of Mackerel” (fish case carrying contests, rope tugs, rowing, etc.).

Silver, green and blue - the colors of a sardine's scales - have become the trademark of Fažana town. The long fishing tradition of this town has resulted in a Fishing academy, where all those enrolled learn to salt this staple of Adriatic cuisine. The Sardine park along the Fažana promenade brings together diverse artistic creations, and hosts numerous fish-themed public festivals.

Fažana - Plenty of good restaurants
At the Sardine trail, visitors have a chance to try and learn how to prepare the eponymous fish in various ways.
The Istrian malvasia, made of a local variety of grape, can be sampled in the wine cellars of the Fažana Riviera. Along the Olive oil trail, you can enjoy the "divine elixir" which the Roman emperors considered the measure of perfection.

Visitors to the Fažana Riviera, aside from the gorgeous beaches, have access to numerous biking trails, golf courses, a windsurfing school; the Brijuni national park is within easy reach, and also is in the vicinity of Pula with its famous amphitheater, the Arena.

Along the western Istrian coast there are several island groups. The the largest and most interesting among them is the Brijuni island group with 14 islands and islets covering and area of 7.42 sq km.
The present day boundaries of the National Park include the land, the surrounding sea and seabed and covers an area of 33.9 sq km. The length of the coastline of all the islands is 46.8km.
The most indented islands are Veliki Brijun (25.9km) and Mali Brijun (8.3km). The shores are mostly low and rocky but easily accessible due to horizontal stratification of the rocks. There are some bays with pebble or sand beaches.

The National Park of Brijuni includes the following islands: Veliki Brijun, Mali Brijun, St. Mark, Gaz, Okrugljak, Supin, Supinić, Galija, Grunj, Vanga (Krasnica), Pusti (Madona), Vrsar, St. Jerome and Kozada. (Krasnica), Pusti (Madona), Vrsar, Sv.Jerolim i Kozada.
Geologically and geo-morphologically Brijuni are the continuation of western Istria, the so-called "Red Istria".
Since the depth of the channel of Fažana is just 12m, the Brijuni islands were an integral part of Istria until some 10,000 years ago.
