The origin of Pula

Pula - Jason & the Argonauts
The legend of the Argonauts tells us about the possible founding of Pula. Jason, yes the one of the Golden Fleece, after pilfering the artefact Jason and the Argonauts flee on a boat to Hellas.
The Colchids pursue and catch up with Jason - a confrontation occurs. Jason has manages to kill Absyrtus, the leader of the Colchids. Jason and the Argonauts continue their escape, while the Colchids, devastated by the loss of Absyrtus decide to stay in Istria, and had found a town of Pula. The Islands Cres and Lošinj, where the battle took place, was later called Apsirtidi in the honor of Absyrtus.
Strabo, a Greek historian and geographer, who lived in 1st century BC, confirmed the story of the foundation of Pula, and as proof writes about the couplet from Hellenic poet Callimachus from Cyrene, who wrote it in Alexandria in the 3rd century BC:
« Οἳ μὲν ἐπ' Ἰλλυριοῖο πόρου σχάσσαντες ἐρετμὰ
λᾶα πάρα ξανθῆς Ἁρμονίης ὅφιος
ἄστυρον ἐκτίσσαντο, τό κεν φυγάδων τις ἐνίσποι
Γραικός, ἀτὰρ κείνων γλῶσσ' ὀνόμηνε Πόλας. »
“Stayed their oars in the Sea of Illyria
Beside the tomb-stone of blonde Harmonia,
And there built a little city, which a Greek would call ‘the city of the exiles,’
But which their language has named Polae.”
History of Pula

Pula - Amphitheatre
The wealth of Roman architecture makes otherwise ordinary Pula (ancient Polensium) a standout among Croatia’s larger cities. The star of the show is the remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater, smack in the heart of the city, which dominates the streetscape and doubles as a venue for summer concerts and festivals.
The Sights of Pula
- The most famous sight in Pula – of course – is the Roman amphitheatre, which is called The Arena.
Built during the 1st century AD and completed under the reign of Emperor Flavius, this amphitheatre is the sixth largest in the world (of those that still exist). The three-storey structure held 23,000 spectators in Roman times and today hosts numerous concerts and events throughout the year, including Pula Film Festival screenings. - The Triumphal Arch of the Sergii was built between 29 and 27 BC in honour of the Sergi family who fought on the side of Octavian, who later became Emperor Augustus, in the Battle of Actium in present-day Greece.
- The Temple of Augustus (Augustov Hram in Croatian), was built during AD 2-14 in honour of Emperor Augustus. It stands at a site next to which there was also an accompanying Temple of Diana (of which only a very small part remains). The Temple now contains Roman sculpture.
- The Forum, where the Temple of Augustus stands, was once the main square in Roman times and is still a bustling piazza today with its many cafes.
- The cathedral contains parts from various centuries, with its rear wall from the 4th century; its sanctuary from the following century; the internal part from the 15th century; and the bell tower from the 17th century.
- Hercules Gate (Herkulova vrata in Croatian; also known as Porta Ercole) is the oldest standing Roman monument, dating from the 1st century BC.
